Why Outdoor Learning is Essential for Preschool Children

At Isabello’s Preschool, outdoor learning isn’t just something we “add on” it’s a core part of how children learn and grow.

Children are naturally curious, active, and drawn to the world around them. When we take learning outside, we give them the freedom to explore, take risks, and develop in ways that simply can’t be replicated indoors.

Outdoor learning supports every area of development.

Physically, children build strength, coordination, and confidence through climbing, balancing, and exploring different terrains. Emotionally, it helps them develop resilience learning to try again, manage small risks, and build independence.

One of the biggest benefits we see is in confidence. A child who might feel unsure indoors often thrives outside, where there is more space, fewer restrictions, and more opportunity to move freely.

Our forest school sessions are a perfect example of this. Children are encouraged to explore nature, problem-solve, and engage in hands-on experiences whether that’s building, collecting, or simply observing the world around them.

Outdoor learning also supports:

  • Language development through shared experiences
  • Social skills through collaborative play
  • Creativity through open-ended exploration

And perhaps most importantly, it allows children to simply be children.

Rain or shine, the outdoors offers something new every day and that sense of discovery is where the real learning happens.
